State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) • November 2023. A Django Girls workshop held alongside the first DjangoCon Africa, opening the door to Python and Django for women in Zanzibar.
When DjangoCon Africa came to Zanzibar for its very first edition in November 2023, Django Girls came with it. Alongside the conference at the State University of Zanzibar, we ran a free, beginner-friendly workshop for women who wanted to take their first steps into programming.
The day opened under the Django Girls banner with a welcome from our coaches, who explained what Django Girls is, how the tutorial works and why nobody needs prior experience to build something real. From there, participants paired up with coaches and worked through Python basics towards their own Django web app.
Between sessions, participants walked the rain-washed SUZA campus together, shared cupcakes and snacks, and met DjangoCon Africa attendees from across the continent. The day closed with a group photo that brought Django Girls, DjangoCon Africa and our partners, including wingu.africa, into one frame.
